The contract with the host family in France for the time of the programme is as follows:
Participants will reside in a private home in exchange for part-time (15 hours a week) language instruction with one or more family members, typically including children or young children or both. The family will provide full board, with flexibility regarding weekday lunches, which depend on whether the hosts have work commitments during the day. Participants are responsible for their own lunch arrangements.
Participants will be provided with a single room, while common areas such as the bathroom and kitchen will be shared. Host families are selected based on their genuine interest in learning the English language and sharing their own culture. A family presentation detailing the family and accommodation will be provided upon confirmation of placement.
English “teachers” are expected to respect the French family’s way of life. While not considered as Au Pairs, they are encouraged to help in household activities such as meal preparation, dish washing, and daily tidying.

Role of the Language Assistant (teacher) in France:
The Language Assistant programme is a voluntary exchange between a French family and an English student.
Participants will teach English to family members 15 hours per week, using various methods such as tutoring, daily conversations, games, helping with homework or activities tailored to the family’s needs. Upon establishing contact with a host family, participants start discussing specific English learning objectives and options, including conversation time and activities with children. The family provides a weekly schedule depending on work and school commitments, clarifying dedicated English learning time.
It is required to prepare a support of work in advance based on the family’s needs, and to use online resources for a better teaching experience.
How you will improve your French in the south of France:
Students will be placed with a French host family in the area of Montpellier, located between Toulouse (around 2h30 by train) and Marseille (around 1h30 by train) and only 3h30 of Paris by high speed train. Montpellier is named “the city where the sun never sets” because there are 300 days of sunshine a year. It is close to the Mediterranean sea and the most sporty city in France.
You will attend French language courses at a reputable school in downtown Montpellier. Classes are conducted in small groups of students (12 students maximum) focusing on developing speaking, writing, reading, and listening skills. You will be placed in a class according to your level. The pedagogical approach is based on the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference). A programme of cultural activities is offered each week.
It will be so easy to study French, meet new international friends and have a great time in France!
What could you do after your experience in France?
If you want to stay a few extra months in France, you could teach English in a high school in France. TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) is a language assistant contract by the French Ministry of Education to teach English to students in a high school.
You could continue your trip in Europe. France has 8 borders and 3 countries speak French: Belgium, Luxembourg and Switzerland. Montpellier is very well placed to travel to the south of Europe.
Or you could start studing or working in France. If you are a citizen of the European Union, you won’t need a work visa. If you are a citizen of the United States for example, you need a specific visa to work or stay longer than 3 months.
Come to France offers many options and opportunities throughout the year.
